A piano trio conversation where tradition and innovation coexist
This work features jazz pianist Stanley Cowell's piano trio, showcasing a close ensemble with Chaney Thomas (bass) and Wardell Thomas (drums).
Cowell's piano playing combines a powerful touch reminiscent of McCoy Tyner with lyrical melodic lines. His improvisations are based on the harmonic structures of standard songs, but they also freely evolve, utilizing modal playing and his unique sense of harmony. The bass and drums do not simply accompany the piano; they compete on equal terms, creating a thrilling interplay between the three. This album documents the trio's pursuit of their own unique expression while carrying on the traditions of modern jazz.
